Embryonic Stem Cell Facilty to be Shut Down by Years End.

The University of Massachuttes announced today that it’s facilities dedicated to Embryonic Stem Cell development will be closed by the end of the year due to lack of funding.

According to the Boston Globe: “That decision in 2008 was seen then as a bold statement of support for research on human embryonic stem cells during a time when federal funding for work on the controversial cells was restricted. But advances in technology and changes to federal policies rapidly cheap cialis online made the bank obsolete, state officials said.”

One of the advances rendering the University of Massachuttes obsolete is the work done in iPS where the adult cells are turned into stem cells. These stem cells  have already converted into bone and other tissues.  There’s no moral dilemma, the science is already decades ahead of embryonic stem cell work, the tissues produced have already been quite successful and there is no rejection of your own tissue.

Dr. Yamanaka was named oe of two Grand Prize winners  by the President of the Republic of Finand for his discovery of a way to turn adult skin cells into cells that act like embryonic stem cells. This discovery has since altered the fields of cell biology and stem cell research, offering new hope for the future of both personalized and regenerative medicine. Drs. Yamanaka and Torvalds will share 1.2 million Dollars.

According to a press release from the Gladstone Institute (affiliated with the University of San Francisco,) six years ago, Dr. Yamanaka discovered that altering the genes of adult skin cells in mice allowed him to induce the cells into becoming like embryonic stem cells. He called them induced pluripotent order generic viagra stem cells, or iPS cells. In 2007, he announced that he had done the same with human adult skin cells.

“Scientists all over the world are using Dr. Yamanaka’s method to create stem cells and making great strides in research,” said Dr. Ainomaija Haarla, president of Technology Academy Finland. “His achievement has had a great impact on research in medicine and biotechnology as pluripotent stem cells are already being used for medical drug testing and the growth of implant tissues. Dr. Yamanaka is unquestionably the father of this innovation.”

Many see iPS cell technology as an entirely new platform for fundamental studies of human disease. Rather than using disease models made in yeast, flies or mice for research, iPS technology lets scientists create human stem cells from the skin cells of patients with a specific disease. As a result, the iPS cells contain a complete set of the genes that resulted in that disease—representing the potential of a far-superior human model for studying disease development, new drugs and treatments. In the future, iPS cells could be used to test both drug safety and efficacy for an individual patient.

“I am both honored to receive this prestigious award and humbled to be in the company of such great innovators,” said Dr. Yamanaka, who is also a professor of anatomy at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), with which Gladstone is affiliated. “The 21st century holds much promise to fight such devastating conditions as heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease—but as researchers and physicians we must continue to innovate new solutions that will help improve the lives of millions worldwide affected by these and many other diseases.”

Dr. Yamanaka has received numerous honors recognizing the importance of his iPS discovery, including the Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award, the Shaw Prize and the Kyoto Prize for Advanced Technology. In April 2012, Dr. Yamanaka was inducted into the National Academy of Sciences, garnering one of the highest honors available for U.S. scientists and engineers.

As the world’s largest technology award, the prize celebrates innovations that have a favorable impact on quality of life and well being.

Why Embryonic Stem Cells Are Not Necessary

Explains Why Embryonic Stem Cells Are Not Necessary

Still confused by the stem cell debate? Don’t feel alone. Medical professionals and the public alike still have many questions about the different types, or sources, of stem cells as well as their potential and actual effectiveness for clinical treatments.

Embryonic stem cells continue to receive the majority of news coverage, yet remain the least likely stem cell to help patients. In fact, even the embryonic stem cell advocates are beginning to admit failure. The California Company, Geron, f

credit New York Times

irst to receive approval to inject embryonic stem cells into a few patients, gave up on their trial and shut down all of their embryonic stem cell research. After a year, none of the patients showed improvements, though they will need to be monitored for many years to come for potential tumor formation. Even celebrity stem cell promoter Michael J. Fox recently admitted that “[embryonic] stem cells” were unlikely to help any patients any time soon. Given that embryonic stem cells are ethically tainted, requiring the destruction of young human life or even creating a new human life via cloning (somatic cell nuclear transfer) specifically for destruction, it’s heartening that many are seeing the many problems associated with this type of stem cell.

Adult stem cells remain the only type of stem cell used successfully to treat human patients. They are the one price of viagra and only gold standard for clinical treatments with stem cells. Adult stem cells have many advantages. They can be isolated from numerous tissues, including bone marrow, muscle, fat, and umbilical cord blood, just to name a few. And isolating the adult stem cells from tissues of a patient or a healthy donor does not require harming or destroying the donor, giving adult stem cells a decided ethical advantage over embryonic stem cells. Adult stem cells also have a proven track record for success at saving lives and improving health on a daily basis. Over 50,000 people around the globe are treated each year with adult stem cells. The diseases and conditions successfully treated by adult stem cells, as shown by published scientific evidence, continue to expand, with published success for numerous cancers, spinal cord injury, heart damage, multiple sclerosis, sickle cell anemia, and many others.

Here are a few samples of adult stem cell advances in the last year.

* Heart damage.

* Muscle repair.

* New windpipes.

* Grow your own transfusion.

Preserve Religious Freedom

Republicans and religious organizations fighting President Obama’s new birth-control-coverage rule have taken the battle to the courts.

Eight lawsuits have been filed in federal district courts across the country challenging the constitutionality of the rule requiring most* employers, even church-affiliated organizations for whom there are deeply held religious objections to covering birth control in workers’ health plans with no out-of-pocket charges. Churches are not included in this mandate.

The matter will ultimately be decided by the nation’s highest court. Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) pointed in the direction of the Supreme Court as he declared: “This issue is not over. . . . These faith-based institutions will not be willing to change their character. . . . And so this is a debate that might be settled at that building across the street.”

In the meantime, though, the plaintiffs will argue, among other claims, that the rule, which takes effect Aug. 1, interferes with their First Amendment right to free exercise of religion by effectively compelling them to provide a form of coverage that conflicts with their beliefs.To win that argument, they will need to clear a major legal hurdle: A landmark 1990 decision in a case called Employment Division v. Smith, in which the Supreme Court found that if a law is “neutral and generally applicable” — meaning that it is not specifically targeted against any religious group — individuals must comply with it even when doing so imposes a burden on their free exercise of religion.Writing for the majority in that case, Justice Antonin Scalia — a conservative justice known for his strong identification with the Catholic Church — found that to allow otherwise “would be courting anarchy” by making “the professed doctrines of religious belief superior to the law of the land and in effect to permit every citizen to become a law unto himself.”

The plaintiffs in the suits now pending over the federal rule contend it is different because it offers exemptions to all sorts of other groups — including small employers and “grandfathered” health plans that were in existence before the health-care law was adopted.  “This indicates that the law is not generally applicable,” said Hannah Smith, senior counsel at the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, a public-interest law firm that is representing employers in four of the legal challenges.

In addition to their constitutional challenges, the plaintiffs will try to convince judges that the federal rule violates a 1993 law adopted by Congress in response to the Supreme Court’s Smith decision.  The Religious Freedom Restoration Act signed into law by President Bill Clinton, essentially replaces the “neutral and generally applicable” standard set by Smith with one that is far more stringent. It states that even a generally applicable federal law cannot “substantially burden” a person’s exercise of religion unless the law furthers a “compelling government interest” and does so by the order viagra “least restrictive means.”

Stand Up for Religious Freedom, Nationwide

Rally Locations and Info

Home Rally Locations

The Pro-Life Action League and Citizens for a Pro-Life Society are pleased to announce that the next Stand Up for Religious Freedom Rally will take place on Friday, June 8, in cities and towns across the United States.

The June 8 Stand Up Rally builds on the tremendous momentum created by the first buy viagra 25mg Stand Up Rally on March 23.

On that day, over 63,000 Americans came out in 145 cities coast to coast pushed back against the new mandate from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that requires all employers provide free contraceptives, sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs through their health plans, even in violation of their consciences.

Now the fight continues with the next Stand Up Rally on Friday, June 8.

Right now the entire Obamacare law, with its oppressive mandates and abortion loopholes, is under review by the United States Supreme Court. A ruling is coming at the end of June.

If the Supreme Court strikes down Obamacare, the June 8 Rally sets the agenda for future health care reform, demanding respect for religious liberty and freedom of conscience.

But if the Court leaves Obamacare intact, the June 8 Rally advances our demand that the HHS Mandate must go.

Come out on June 8, 2012—the 223rd anniversary of the day our Founding Father James Madison introduced the Bill of Rights, with its guarantee of religious freedom, to the First Congress—and stand up for religious freedom!

The Nationwide Rally for Religious Freedom was a peaceful, family-friendly, non-partisan, ecumenical event. For more information, please see the Rally Guidelines and Protocols,.

Update:  The rally was very successful and thanks to Missy Rielly Smith, there are photos to Share.
